Motivated by my passion for exercise and fitness, as well as a recent question during my Elegance Q&A on The Elegance Education Instagram page, it’s time to delve into the wonderful world of elegant gym wear. In an era where trends frequently gravitate towards less classy styles, recognising genuinely elegant choices can be similar to looking through smoke. Below you will find my list of Do’s and Don’ts plus access to my complete shoppable Elegant Activewear Affair wardrobe to educate and assist you on your journey to create your own timelessly elegant gym outfits.

Do’s:

  1. Wear The Right Size: The foundation of an elegant gym look is wearing the right size. Just because it is stretchy and you can put it on doesn’t mean it’s the right fit. Select workout gear that complements your body shape and size. This will ensure both comfort and class.

  2. Coordination & Minimalism: Aim to wear a matching ensemble in a simple design. A single-color or monochromatic matching outfit in a minimalistic and clean design will look stylish, classy and give you an effortless pulled-together look. Less is always more.

  3. Layer & Style: Pair your matching set with a jumper or jacket for added style and comfort. Choose classic cuts and styles, steering clear of overly baggy, overly trendy, or masculine looks. A coat is also an easy way to polish your look if your exercise session is made up of a light walk and perhaps breakfast.

  4. Accessorise: Don’t skip the accessories! Accessories instantly elevate. For example, match your drink bottle, sunglasses, hat, or watch to your outfit. Don’t forget some nice simple earrings, like pearls!

  5. Don't Forget Your Hair: Even for a workout, your hair deserves a lot of attention. Keep it clean (or at least dry shampooed) and styled neatly. If you are just going for a light walk and breakfast to be social, nothing beats a blow-wave. A well-groomed appearance extends to all aspects of your life including fitness.

  6. Wear Natural-Looking Makeup: It’s always in good taste to apply the makeup basics, even for a workout. Choose light makeup to maintain a fresh appearance. A minimalist approach keeps it appropriate for a workout while enhancing your beauty.

Don'ts:

  1. Say No to Gathered Leggings: Avoid any leggings with gathering in the back or seams/markings under and around the glutes. To remain looking elegant, you should avoid designs that draw unnecessary attention to this area and instead choose designs that modestly compliment your overall figure.

  2. Leggings Pulled Up Too High: Don't pull your leggings up so high that we can see the outline of your private area, it is not necessary or classy. Put your leggings on correctly no matter how many times you are instructed by fitness influencers to do otherwise! 

  3. No Tiny Shorts: Choose shorts of a modest length that balance comfort and coverage. Avoid tiny styles that reveal too much.

  4. Uncleanliness: Never compromise on cleanliness. Always wear clean gym clothes, any type of bad odour is a definite no for an elegant woman.

  5. Dirty Shoes: Don't wear dirty runners! Always wear clean, well-maintained shoes.

  6. Visible Undergarments: Never wear undergarments you can see through your gym clothes. Choose seamless, invisible styles only.
